When patients visit one of the Esquire Dental Centres offices with tooth pain, our goal is to provide relief by finding and correcting the cause.
Tooth pain may occur for any one of several different reasons. Often, the source of pain is infection that has stemmed from an untreated cavity. Cavities are progressive problems caused by oral bacteria. When the outer part of the tooth becomes damaged, a passageway to the softer inner tissues is created and oral bacteria naturally move into this area where brushing and flossing can no longer reach them. As decay moves inward at an accelerated pace, it becomes likely that pulp tissue in the innermost chamber will become infected. At this point, the best way to eliminate tooth pain is to perform root canal therapy, which we do in our Pickering, North York, and Scarborough offices.
Another potential cause of damaged tooth pulp is injury. If a tooth has sustained direct injury, it is possible that a fracture or chip may occur, letting oral bacteria into the inner chamber where pulp, the root, blood vessels, and nerves live.
When the pulp chamber has become infected, pain will progressively get worse until care becomes urgently needed. In this situation, pain is eliminated through the removal of infected tissue. This is the purpose of root canal therapy. Using specific instruments and technique, your specialized dentist will carefully removal all damaged tooth material before cleansing and sterilizing the now empty root canal. Specific filling material called gutta percha is inserted into the canal to protect it from further bacterial invasion. The damaged tooth is restored with a beautiful, durable dental crown.
