Did you know gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss? Also known as periodontal disease, gum disease is an infection of the gums and the adjacent structures. At its onset, gum disease is painless, and many people don’t know they have it until it’s too late. Left untreated, periodontal disease destroys teeth-supporting structures, eventually causing tooth loss.
Esquire Dental Centres offers scaling and root planing (SRP) in Scarborough, Ontario, to overcome gum disease conservatively. Also known as deep teeth cleaning, scaling and root planing removes bacterial toxins and unwanted deposits in the deep periodontal pockets to promote gum health.
What is deep teeth cleaning?
When gum disease is left to thrive, the infection “eats away” the periodontal ligaments holding teeth together. This causes gums to pull away (recede) from teeth, causing deep periodontal pockets between teeth and gums. These periodontal pockets are too deep to clean with home dental tools.
SRP is the first line of defence against gum disease. This treatment uses special tools to remove dental plaque and tartar (calculus) from the teeth’ surface, deep beneath the gum line, and around the root. Next, the dentist smoothes (planes) the roots to create a healthy, clean surface for the gum tissues to reattach to the teeth.
What is the procedure for scaling and root planing?
If deposits are substantial, this non-surgical treatment may need more than one visit. If multiple visits are needed, we may treat different quadrants of the mouth during each visit. This approach allows you to continue using the untreated part of your mouth for eating and other activities between visits. Breaking the treatment into manageable sessions ensures a thorough treatment while minimizing discomfort and disruptions to your daily routine.
Unlike regular cleanings, deep teeth cleaning goes deeper beneath the gum line, which can cause pain. We ensure your comfort by numbing your gums with anesthetics. After your treatment, you may experience bruising, swelling, and pain. These discomforts are expected, but it doesn’t mean you tolerate them. We usually recommend salt water rinses after the visits to encourage healing. We’ll also schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your treatment progress.
Deep teeth cleaning may be the only treatment you need to halt the progression of gum disease. However, if your infection doesn’t respond to non-surgical treatments, you may need periodontal surgery to reestablish your optimal periodontal health.

What should I do after deep teeth cleaning?
Once your gums are healed after SRP, they should improve in appearance (pink and healthy) and bleed less when brushing. Unfortunately, periodontal disease will develop again if you don’t care for your teeth and gums well.
To maintain optimal gum health, it’s essential to observe the following:
- Brush and floss your teeth diligently
- Limit the intake of sugary foods
- Visit your dentist twice annually for routine check-ups and cleanings
- Quit tobacco use
- Manage immune-suppressing conditions like stress and diabetes
