For millions of teens and adults, the process of correcting misalignment has become incredibly easy thanks to Invisalign. Invisalign is enormously appealing for several reasons, one of which is the ease of oral hygiene throughout the course of treatment.

The difference between Invisalign and conventional orthodontic is the use of nearly invisible plastic aligner trays to move teeth. Designed using state-of-the-art software, Invisalign trays are made to fit around teeth with gentle pressure but also to be removable. Because teeth are not covered all the time, patients have the ability to enjoy meals and also to better care for their teeth as they move towards a healthier, more attractive smile. Oral hygiene remains a very important factor throughout the teeth straightening process.

Invisalign trays fit over teeth up to the gum line. Trays must be worn approximately 22 hours each day in order to achieve results within the estimated time frame. The fact that Invisalign trays fully cover teeth does not mean that oral bacteria cannot accumulate against enamel. For this reason, we encourage patients to be mindful of their oral care habits.

Formal recommendations for oral care are that we brush and floss our teeth every day. Brushing should be performed at least twice a day. Deviating from this recommendation can have a negative impact even on the person not wearing Invisalign trays. For the Invisalign patient whose teeth are covered by aligners numerous hours a day for several months, hygiene takes on new meaning.

The purpose of brushing and flossing is to remove bacteria that live on teeth and gum tissue. It would be ideal, especially for the Invisalign patient, to brush after every meal. This habit would greatly cut the risk of plaque formation. Plaque is an invisible substance made up of saliva, food debris, and bacteria. When plaque sticks to teeth, acidic by-product from bacteria weakens enamel, causing cavities. Brushing gently before inserting Invisalign aligners keeps teeth better protected from this harmful substance.
