What can be expected from gum disease treatment in Pickering

Nearly 80 percent of adults in North America will, at some point, develop gum disease. The severity of this common oral condition ranges from very mild to very severe. When addressing the issue of gum disease with our patients, our goal is to develop a treatment plan for prevention rather than management. If you live in the Pickering, North York, or Scarborough area, there is an Esquire Dental Centres office near you ready to attend to your oral health.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the term used to describe the earliest, mildest form of gum disease. Gingivitis develops when plaque accumulates at the gum line. Plaque is an odorless, colorless biofilm in which oral bacteria thrive. When not quickly addressed, this condition can move between gum tissue and teeth, increasing the threat of advanced infection. Gingivitis is very subtle, marked by slight redness or swelling, chronic bad breath and bleeding during oral hygiene. If these symptoms are noticed, an appointment should be promptly scheduled.

The good news about gingivitis is that this condition can be reversed if care is delivered right away. Typically, gingivitis will be addressed with professional cleaning that will remove plaque and tartar from teeth, the gum line, and beneath the gums if necessary. In order to remain ahead of the infection process, we may also schedule routine care on a more frequent basis.

Periodontitis

Gum disease that has advanced beyond gingivitis is referred to as periodontitis. In this stage of gum disease, the ligaments and tissues beneath the gums have become involved and there is also significant risk to the health of bone tissue in the jaw. When periodontitis occurs, gum tissue may pull away from teeth and actually recede to the point root structure becomes visible. The more infection progresses, the greater the chance that teeth will become unstable.

Periodontitis cannot be cured. With adequate management, however, we can remain in control of oral health, stopping the progression of disease.
